A Little Bit about the Village of Seldovia Alaska.
Location: Seldovia can be found on the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, is about 250 miles south of Anchorage and 17 miles across Kachemak Bay from Homer. Access is limited to small aircraft, private boat or water ferry as the community has no roads leading in or out of the village that connect with the road system. There are few paved streets in town and no traffic lights. Seldovia, The City: The town has schools for grades 1-12, supports a thriving commercial and sportfishing industry, is an attractive retirement community and is an active community that embraces tourism with a passion. 1964 Earthquake: Seldovia was changed forever after the earthquake. The land mass shrunk by about four feet, which allowed high tides to crash over the boardwalk destroying houses and stores. The waterfront was replaced and renewed with fill from surrounding hills. This resulted the town to be rebuilt above the tides on higher ground. What to see and what to do in Seldovia! Alaska Tribal Cache Gift Shop: Operated by the Seldovia Village Tribe it offers wild berry jams, jellies and syrups as well as a gift shop and museum. St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church: One of the major tourist attractions for Seldovia, the church serves not only as an active religious facility in the community, but is noted as a major landmark throughout the Kenai Peninsula. The church was built around 1820 and is located on a hill overlooking Seldovia proper. Tours usually given at 2:00 pm by appointment, photographs are not allowed inside. Fourth Of July Celebration: This is the place to be on the 4th of July. Every year, Food, Games, Races, a Parade, Dancing and of course loads of fun are provided during the holiday celebration. It’s been said that the town grows to 3,000 people during the Fourth of July festivities. Walks on the beach: Outside Beach as well as many other areas are wonderful locations to look for treasures that have washed in from the Gulf of Alaska (especially after a big storm). Along the beaches you can find shells, drift wood, tide pools, and unusual rocks. If you're an avid beachcomber, charter a boat and forage some of the remote beaches of Kachemak Bay. Wildlife Viewing: Seldovia is the home to over 50 bald eagles, so bring your cameras and binoculars. There are many places to watch and see a wide variety of other birds and animals. Look for stellar jays, pine siskins, crows, pheasants, ducks, magpies, blue herons, seagulls, ravens, otters, seals, whales, moose, black bear, all kinds of fish, and lots, lots more. Humpback whales pass by Seldovia Bay during the months of May through August each year. Bike Rides: Everyone young and old enjoys biking in the Seldovia
area. With so many places to head off to on your mountain bike as well as biking around
town. For the eager bikers in the group, the 15 mile road from Seldovia to Jakolof Bay is
a true feat. Mountain bikers can continue on from Jakolof Bay out to Red Mountain. ATV rentals and tours: Just across from the Harbormasters office is the Seldovia ATV rental office that offers a variety of guided all-terrain vehicle tours in the Kachemak Bay town and local area. Berry Picking: In the Seldovia area, wild blueberries, salmonberries and highbush cranberries grow in abundance, while berries like wild raspberries and currants are more rare, but are available. Berry picking is a summer event in Seldovia as the jams and jellies made with wild berries are wonderful to the taste. Clamming: Clams available include butter clams, horse clams, cockles, blue mussels and steamer clams. You best dig for clams during one of the minus tides in areas like Jakolof Bay, Tutka Bay, and Kasitsna Bay. Recreational and commercial clamming in the Seldovia area has been taking it's toll and is now showing signs of over-harvesting, we encourage you to only take what you can eat and try to not disturbe the clam beds any more then possible. Concerts & Performances: Seldovia has a very active Arts Council and they bring in many artists all year long to perform. There is a great concert during the 4th of July celebration. Hiking: There are many hiking trails in the Seldovia area.
One of the most famous is the scenic Otterbahn trail to Outside Beach. Hikes to
the Upper Reservoir, to Red Mountain, and many other sites can be fun too. Fishing: In the midst of town, as in all of Seldovia Bay, a wide variety of fishing opportunities abounds. One can depart on an offshore fishing trip for salmon or halibut. Here in town, king salmon, silver salmon, return to the bay and into the Slough and sockeye salmon are available off the beaches in July, pink salmon are dispersed throughout the area and chum salmon are found at the head of the bay. Fishing is available from the shore or the docks as well as the ability to go out on board a fishing charter from Seldovia. Aside from the charter boats, most of the fishing is centered at or near the bridge that crosses the Seldovia Slough, you can also try the harbor from a small boat. Trolling along the outside of the breakwater is effective for king salmon in June and also for silvers in August.
