OK we find ourselves in the town of Kenai with some time on our hands and nothing that needs to be done. It's time to see what sorts of exciting things we can find to do in a bedroom community of 7000 people and a dog. Now this ought to be fun! | |||||||
Things To Do In Kenai AlaskaFirst stop was Arby's for a quick bite to eat, little did we know that this was to be one of the highlights of our stay in this area of the peninsula. We asked one of the kids working behind the counter for ideas on things to do and everything came back, Well, Over in Soldotna... Kind of summed up our stay. We looked for a souvenior shop and found none. Then we searched for a sporting goods store as we needed to replace a sleeping pad and found none. Lots of empty buildings and very little in the form of shopping available. This town needs some real serious help.
All Wasn't Lost; Finally a little of what we had hoped to find. This old fish cannery was more then just a tourist attraction as the cannery is still in operation today and with the dip netters in the river out in front of the pier, we were able to watch as they were using these huge nets to gather their winters meals. Inside we found a couple dozen small shops, some local arts and crafts for sale, a coffee shop, ice cream shop and a restaurant. Though most items were expensive even on Alaskan standards, we did make some purchases of gifts and ate in the restaurant. This was a fun place to visit and well worth the out of the way drive.

Drive out along the gravel road behind the Chrysler Dealership and watch for caribou, moose and bear. We saw three or four small groups of caribou and a couple moose one night. The bear was a couple days later and was closer to behind the airport just before the juvenile detention center. One of the favorite memories from our stay in Kenai came from being chased by a moose in front of our motel one morning. We were headed out to work early one morning and met a cow moose face to face in front of the Place Motel north of town. Things got interesting real fast when we noticed a pair of calves off to our left and behind us. The cow was not pleased that we were there and began snorting and scuffing her front hoofs in the driveway. We both shouted at her and that just seemed to irritate her even more. At this point we had the car between us and the momma moose and probably should have stayed there, but we didn’t and as soon as we started backing up towards the motel, the cow closed in on us so rapidly it left us no time to even turn around. For some reason she stopped short of running us over and we were able to get back into the motel door. Speechless and out of breath, we just stood there looking at each other and then started laughing uncontrollably. We learned right there and then that the animals you see in these Alaskan towns are still as dangerous and unpredictable as those you encounter in the wild. Take a tour of the small brewary in Nikiski and sample the local brew. Kassiks Kenai Brew Stop is located off of Holt Lamplight accessed from the Kenai Spur highway via South Miller road. Kassik’s has 6 fantastic ales on tap. They are open 7 days a week. Kassik's Kenai Brew Stop.
