Things To Do In Hope Alaska.
- Experience historic buildings and relax in this beautiful Alaskan mining town. Hope was an early gold rush town. There is a store downtown that has been serving customers since 1896 and a log Social Hall built at the turn of the century that is still used for community meetings, weddings and dances. Hope City got its name when the miners decided to name the town after the next person off the boat --and that was 17 year old prospector Percy Hope. Many of the old building still remain and you can still find a few soles mining gold in the area.
- Hiking and Mountain Biking Trails: This area is best known for its many hiking trails.
- Gull Rock Trail – Begins in the Porcupine Campground by the parking area. A fairly easy 5-mile (one way) hike with an elevation gain and loss of 700 feet. Enjoy scenic views along Turnagain Arm. The trail crosses rockslides, an avalanche gully, old cathedral-like forests, and an old sawmill ruin. The trail ends at Gull Rock where you can stay and camp overnight, but there are no facilities. This trail is also accessible to mountain bikers and is considered a moderate to difficult ride.
- Hope Point Trail - Begin this trek at the entrance of Porcupine Campground and prepare to climb 2.5 miles up the ridge to 3900 foot Mt. Hope. This trail is not maintained and is steep and rocky in places. Mountain goats, bears and moose can be seen at various times and there are breath-taking views of Turnagain Arm and Hope's valley.
- Resurrection Creek Trail - The Hope-end of the trail head begins 5 miles up on Resurrection Road. The trail leads over about 38 miles of forested and alpine terrain to the trail head on the Sterling Highway near Cooper Landing. The elevation change of about 2000 feet occurs during this hike. Mountain biking conditions are fairly moderate. Forest Service cabins are available for rent by calling, (907) 271-2599.
