Things to See and Do in Cooper Landing, Alaska.

  1. Rafting on the magnificent Kenai river. Here is a river rafting adventure that everyone can enjoy. Trips departing from Cooper Landing offer you an experience you are sure to never forget. This is not some class IV or V whitewater river trip meant for serious adrenaline junkies, but it will get you excited and thrilled without subjecting you to the dangers associated with the extreme whitewater river rafting trips like those offered on six mile creek near the turn off for Hope, Alaska about 30 miles back on the Seward highway towards Anchorage.
  2. Don your Stetson and take a ride on a real live Alaskan horseback trail ride. Trips up the old Sterling highway along the salmon spawning stream of quartz creek are my personal favorite. There are also carriage rides, wilderness pack trips, and more offered in the rustic setting surrounding Cooper Landing.
  3. Dine in style at one of the many excellent rustic Alaskan restaurants and cafes in the area.
  4. Hiking trails in the area are numerous.
    • Russian River Trail, This is a very well kept trail that lead to the two lakes, Upper Russian Lake and Lower Russian Lake, that form the famous salmon fishing river and passes a very scenic waterfall where you can watch the red salmon as they stubbornly attack the raging waters in their quest to fulfill their destiny. A word of caution about this trail. Brown and black bears feed upon these wild salmon and are all to freequently encountered along this river. If you do encounter on of these bruins, do not panic, run or throw items at them. Remain calm, talk in a normal voice and let the beast pass unharrassed. Learn about dealing with Alaska's bears here.
    • Russian lakes trail offers a medley of recreational opportunities including hiking, mountain biking, horseback rides and skiing for single day or for extended wilderness adventures. There are 3 public use forest service cabins available for rent and many outstanding campsites with scenic views that will captivate your sole. Good to excellent fishing is available in both the Russian river and Cooper and Russian lakes. The trail is closed to horses from April 1 - June 30 and motorized ORV’s from May 1 - Nov 30.
