Anchor Point AK is located on the Sterling highway between Ninilchik and Homer. Anchor Point is noted for its excellent halibut fishing and charter boat fleet. The Anchor River offers great salmon fishing and the beaches offer razer clam digging during low tides. Just a nice 200 mile drive from Anchorage down the scenic Seward Highway to the Junction at Tern Lake, and then over the breathtaking Sterling Highway is the unincorporated town of Anchor Point. Here you will experience the friendliness of the local residents of this small rural Alaskan community that draws many Alaskans and tourists to the area each year. Residents of Anchor Point consist of real life Alaska homesteaders, commercial fishermen, fishing guides and charter operators, small business owners, and a growing population of retired Alaskans, Anchor Point retains the long lost values of a true caring for our neighbor community that makes it a gem in the rough of the Last Frontier.

This page addresses some of our families favorite things to do in Anchor Point on the Kenai Peninsula. From fishing the Anchor River to riding dirt bikes on the beach, we have long enjoyed our many summer camping trips to this seaside location just west of our home.

Today there is a growing number of fast ocean going charter boats in the Anchor Point area that offer halibut charters as well as salmon fishing in the near shore waters of Cook Inlet. These charter boats are usually between 26 to 32 feet in length and normally limit their cliental to six persons per boat.

When fishing in the area, you will enjoy some excellent views of Mount Redoubt and Mount Iliamna volcanoes along with the rest of the mountains of the Alaska Range opposite the peninsula. Seagulls, arctic terns, eagles and the yellowlegs are common sights. Its always fun to sit on the bluffs and photograph both seagulls and bald eagles as they soar in the breeze along the cliffs.

Children and adults alike enjoy camping on the beaches, sitting around a campfire, roasting hotdogs and feasting on freshly dug clams. Just be sure to set up camp above the high tide water mark or you may be in for a little excitement.

Fishing in the Anchor River is highly regulated and a current fishing regulations pamphlet is mandatory. There is a tackle shop as you turn off the old sterling highway onto river road that can answer any questions you may have.

Noteworthy Facts:

  • Bridge over the Anchor River in Anchor Point AK.Anchor Point is the westernmost point in North American that you can reach via the highway system.
  • The population as of the 2000 cencus was 1845 persons but that swells to an uncountable sum during the summer fishing season.
  • The name "Anchor Point" comes from a legend that in the summer of 1778, Captain James Cook who discovered this area, lost an anchor in the area.
  • A large portion of the population makes a living in the tourism industry from the Anchor River and Cook Inlet via guided fishing trips. Vacationers arrive to fish the river during the summer salmon runs during May through Sept.
  • There beaches in Anchor Point are well known for excellent razor clam-digging as well, which draws many locals and tourists to the area during minus tide conditions.
  • Camping on the sandy beach is one of the experiences treasured by the locals. The beaches can be crowded on weekends and holidays as the residents of the peninsula flock to Anchor Point for a little of the Best Of Alaska.
  • Be cautious of the tides when on the beaches as incoming tides have been responsible for a number of strandings and even some deaths.
  • On clear days, views of the Cook Inlet reviel four active volcanoes, Mount Spurr, Mount Redoubt, Mount Iliamna, and Mount Augustine, all members of the famed Pacific Ring of Fire. Steam is often seen coming from any or all of these volcanoes and volcanic tremors, small earthquakes, are considered the norm in the region.
  • Boat launching via boatramp or tractor is available with parking along the beach for vehicles and trailers. A day use fee applies for use.
  • Three state campgrounds are located along the Anchor River from River Road that accesses the beach. Campsites are available on a first come basis and ammenities include fire pits, tables, toilets, and fresh water.
  • Anchor Point Visitor Center is located in the log cabin building at the intersection of the Old and New Sterling Highways. The visitors center is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
