Whether you enjoy fly-fishing or spin fishing, the Anchor River is an great stream for fishing from early spring to late fall. And the renowned waters of Cook Inlet offers an abundance of fishing opportunities for halibut, salmon, shark and many other salt water fish.

Fishing season on the Anchor River begins each year on the weekend prior to Memorial Day. At this time, fishermen, including myself, converge upon the river for the grand opening of King Salmon season. This fishery runs for the next five consecutive weekends, yes, weekends only unless opened or closed by an emergency order by the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game. The river will then reopen on the July 01 for all other salmon species excluding King Salmon and will continue to remain open through the steelhead runs that end with freeze up.

Now for the real fun if you are fishing with the family. Early July is when the Dolly Varden enter the river in very strong numbers. This is an exciting fishery for the younger generation and is sure to thrill the parents as well. Dolly Varden fishing will continue until freeze up but peaks in early August. Pink Salmon can be found in Anchor River from early July through late August followed be the ever popular Silver Salmon that begin to show in the river in the second half of July and continue on through the month of August.

Now the Steelhead in the Anchor River is one of a few native runs in the state accessible by any road or highway. These sea run rainbow trout begin to show around the mid part of August, and peak in mid September. Steelhead fishing continues on the Anchor River until the river actually freezes up. The Anchor River Steelhead and Rainbow Trout are strictly a catch and release fishery and no fish may be retained.

For those of you wanting to fish the area from a private boat, the Anchor Point and Cook Inlet fishery is easily accessible by launching from the boat launch at the mouth of the river or off the beach using one of the tractor launch facilities available. Halibut fishing in Cook Inlet is excellent throughout the summer months from May through September. Cook Inlet boasts two runs of King Salmon, the first being in May and June, the second in late June through July. The final salmon run is the Silver Salmon that enter Cook Inlet around Anchor Point sometime in mid July and continue into the middle of August. Anchor Point has some excellent fishing charters available to take you to this grand daddy of saltwater fisheries.

Anchor River State Recreation Area - The Anchor River is one of the most popular rivers in Alaska for bank fishing for salmon, steelhead, and Dolly Varden. Easy access to this state recreation area offers convenient camping at one of the four campgrounds and picnic opportunities at the day use parking areas. In addition to great salmon fishing along the Anchor River there is excellent salmon and halibut fishing in Cook Inlet. There are fishing charters that take you out on fully outfitted and guides fishing trips as well as a privately operated tractor launch service on the beach near the mouth of the river for launching and retrieving boats from the waters of Cook Inlet. A beautiful tidal estuary provides a great place to watch for shorebirds and see an occasional moose or bear.
